I have some interesting functions, my primary candidate is a balooning function that will slow down search by a preselected percentage in a narrow variation width (at random). Then if you use forward pruning of some kind (nullmove comes to mind) the search effort will automagically be extended at, hopefully, more useful nodes. Tuning can be made by running test positions many times and average the results. Yes, I have created chess engines with an off day! Regards dan.
