I was just thinking that in addition to various styles for Crafty, if the evaluation parameters are contained in an external file that is read for each game, wouldn't it be possible to use genetic algorithms to breed styles for any particular player. For example, 1) Download a file of Karpov games from the Pitt site. 2) Analyze a large number of games looking for static positions, where individual stylistics differences between players will show up. 3) Limit the positions to middle game and early end game, so the influence of the opening book is minimized. 4) Export the positions to an EPD file, so they can be used like a test suite. Now write a program which calls Crafty and runs the Karpov suite, tweaks the parameters, and just tries to maximize its score on the suite. After that, turn the Karpov file you initially used into an opening book for Crafty for even more authenticity. Roger
