I would say that Fritz will be more than enough for you at your level.
I'm a 1500 player, and find that Fritz is much more than enough for me!
The database capabilities are fully functional, and can open any database
of any size -- in cbf, cbh, and pgn formats. You can branch your analysis
infinitely, save all your games, etc. There's even an excellent 303,000
game database included with the program. And, best of all, you can
download various (additional) engines like Crafty and Comet which are
slightly less strong than the commercial engines, and thus offer
patzers like us a somewhat better game.

However, if you don't want to spend any money at all, I'd suggest taking a
look at Chessbase Lite, as it will save all your games, comes with an
analysis engine, and is _free._ Even if you buy Fritz, I'd suggest
downloading CB Lite as an accompanying program.

Good luck with your studies. :)
