The latest version of Arasan can be downloaded from
http://www.best.com/~jdart/arasan.htm. As before,
source is available. Mostly this version has bug
fixes and a few speed improvements. It has been
playing on ICC and has recently been rated over
2650 at blitz, running on a K6-2/400 (I don't attach
a lot of importance to the rating, and expect it
to fluctuate, but generally it seems to be playing
well).
Following is the change summary (from the source archive):
7-17-1999 : Arasan 5.2
1. Advanced unprotected pawns are penalized only if no other
penalty (isolation, etc.) has been given.
2. Bug fixes in the scoring for passers protected by the king,
in is_theoretical_draw (for KBP vs K), and in pawn race
scoring.
3. ArasanX will now claim a draw by repetition if its opponent
fails to do so.
4. Somewhat less penalty is given for moving pawns near the king.
Rook passed pawns are scored less than other passed pawns but
the difference is less now. Other minor eval tweaks.
5. Razoring is done at somewhat higher depths in the tree.
6. Lazy evaluation parameters in the scoring module have been
tuned.
7. Tweaks to time management code (in calctime.cpp). Generally
Arasan will use a little more time in "increment" games.
8. Move_Ordering::order_captures was being called incorrectly
(passing in depth rather than alpha) - this is fixed.
9. The PRankCount array in the Board class has been removed -
this information is calculated as needed in the Scoring
module. This has improved the search speed, especially for
endgames.
