Right, it might be caused by the autoplayer or it might be caused by a bug in
the engine making the blunder.  The fact that it couldn't be reproduced doesn't
prove a huge amount - it is possible that the engine has some sort of bug that
causes corruption of internal data structures after a particular series of
events.  I've had these bugs before, and they are insanely hard to reproduce.

The fact that both of these blunders happened against fritz is a more telling
point.  But, perhaps similar blunders happened against other programs?  It is
possible that Marcus only examined the games vs fritz and didn't give the other
games as much attention.
