Subject: A view from the boundary.

I download the CCC zip files and read them a day late. Usually they are around
100k. When I noticed the latest two where 200k plus, my heart sank, which is a
comment in itself because I knew the increased interest would not be due to
computer chess programming. (Yes I am a nerd. Well an aspiring nerd anyway.
But unlikely to be a top nerd and write a wonderful chess program that so many
enjoy.).

From past experience, from the increased file size, I expected the usual: Deep
Blue cheated/no it did not; Fritz is best/no it is not; ChessMaster is great/no
it sucks (learning American :-) ); someone else would have won WCCC if they had
played different moves; just because a program won does not mean it is best and
therefore should have won; the latest round of Bob Hyatt baiting; and so on and
so on.

I was wrong of course. Although many of the posts had familiar qualities - my
opinion is the truth and I will keep stating it until you agree with it in
public, and if it is against the Charter well we will just have to change the
Charter in my image; anyway, I will keep on arguing until I win (even it I have
to redefine the debate and completely change my point of view) or at the very
least have the last word. Some of the most pertinent comments came from James
Robertson. Many other comments could well have come from someone younger (no
offence James) – maybe they did.

Thank you Bruce for upholding the Charter and deleting the joke. I was offended
by it, not because of its content but because it was posted here. It should
have been deleted quicker. It should never have been posted here – until the
Charter is changed. This is black and white. There is no grey.

If we are going to change CCC into rgcc, perhaps now for the benefit of the
majority (or at least the vociferous minority) who have little interest in chess
programming, I wonder how many members have any enthusiasm for a dry, moderated
computer chess section/forum where like-minded people can discuss computer chess
while restraining themselves from trying to impose their view of life on others.
Comedians, philosophers and politicians can then talk to a more appreciative
audience, and the rest us can be spared.
