Subject: Moderation: A Week in Heaven Followed by a Week in Hell!

Author: Steven Schwartz

Date: 10:14:51 07/26/99

I got back from a VERY relaxing week on a little island in
the Caribbean called Nevis last Thursday to be greeted by
what some CCC members have called the Moderator Constitutional
Crisis.

Since then (in addition to catching up on a week's worth of
backlogged work), I have read every single post that has dealt
with the recent moderation controversy as well as a few dozen
emails on the subject, and I must say that some controversies
just do not have a simple answer. This one is no exception.

Some observations…

1) Both Fernando (in writing the, now, infamous, "joke") and
Bruce (in deleting the now, infamous, "joke") were both acting
in what they believed to be the best interests of the CCC. I
do not think, as some have suggested, that there were ulterior
motives on either side. They may be polar opposites in their
views of CCC, and, perhaps their views on life, but they are
both good people and have a genuine interest in making CCC a
better place to visit. And from the 100s of posts from 100s
of CCC members that have followed, it appears that we all truly
care about what CCC is and what it should become.

2) I have asked Dann Corbit to take over Fernando's vacated
Moderator chair. Dann, as you may remember, was voted an alternate
Moderator by the membership. You may reach all three moderators
by clicking on the Moderator Email Link at the top of the CCC
Message Board.

3) For those of you who have been upset by the fact that
posts about moderation issues were outnumbering those of
chess computer issues, I apologize, but I am sure there will
be other flare-ups along the way. They all eventually die down.
However, I would like to put into effect right now a new CCC
rule. Since our new moderators do not seem to mind posts
concerning moderation, starting now, ALL posts concerning
moderation MUST have the word "Moderation:" beginning the
subject heading. Then, those who do now care about the moderation
issue will not have waste their time opening threads that start
with terms like "Hmmmmm" or "Three's a Crowd" or "About My Dirty
Suicide" only to find that they are moderator linked as opposed
to chess computer linked. If you post a message dealing with
moderation issues and do not start the subject heading with
the word "Moderation", your post will be deleted. This is not
meant as an invitation to have the current controversy go on
indefinitely or even have moderation issues as daily fare on CCC,
but should a post be necessary, we need to be sure that it is
correctly labeled.

4) For those of you wondering what the membership feels about off
topic posts, here are the results of a CCC poll held a year ago.
I would not suspect that the results would be any different today:

Poll Question #7 ended June 4, 1998

If you were to rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 as to your
tolerance in CCC for "off-topic" posting with 1 being extremely
tolerant of everything posts directly related to computer chess,
where would you rate yourself?
