Hi Gary,
Here is the link to an excellent FAQ on chess over the Internet.
http://www.gambitsoft.com/komputer.htm
In it you will find everything you need to know. I will add this much, though
opinions will undoubtedly vary: FICS is by far the best free site but the best
site period is ICC (http://www.chessclub.com). It is a pay-site ($49 a year) but
you will find no end of opponents plus there are simuls, lectures, live coverage
of events, and a large number of titled players. I was just watching Morozevich
(yes, the same fellow ranked #4 in the world) blitz there a half hour ago. On
both though, you can ask for a time increment (add time after every move) in
order to compensate for any difficulties you may have. Playing with an increment
is extremely common so you would never feel singled out. I hope you enjoy the
experience. Have fun! :-)
