It won a drawn game after a blunder by Kasparov (he resigned), lost one in good style, and won one after a terrible blunder. Its only two victories were the result of blunders. As a result we know very little of its true strength. To say it is the most powerful chess force of all time is as unsubstantiated as saying that Fischer is still the best player in the world. There is some evidence for both facts (Fischer was the best in his time, and Deep Blue beat an obviously out of form Kasparov), but I believe neither are true. Some other facts to chew on: If the First Kasparov - Karpov match had been just 6 games, Karpov would have beaten Kasparov in the match and retained his title. Kasparov has a huge plus score against Anand. Anand has a plus score against Kramnik. If we follow logic, then Kasparov should also have a plus score against Kramnik, but this is not true; in fact Kramnik has a plus score against Kasparov. Therefore, just because Kasparov has a plus score against Karpov and Deep Blue has a plus score against Kasparov does not mean that Deep Blue would have a plus score agianst Karpov. A World Championship has never been 6 games. Deep Blue refused to play Kasparov again. Perhaps the DB team did not think they could beat Kasparov twice? The DB-Kasparov match was not the WC. Kasparov's rating is >50 points higher now than when he lost to DB. DB had 'years' of preparation against Kasparov before the match, while Kasparov had not seen a single DB game, or even a single DB move. etc...... James
