It would be strange if the other programs have the same problem, but I suppose they could. When you don't start EXchess with the "xb" flag, it doesn't know that it is playing under winboard until winboard sends its own "xboard" command. Because EXchess doesn't know that it is playing under xboard yet, it will send out its usual start up information, which includes the first command line: White-to-Move[1]: The "White" part of this command line is picked up by winboard, and winboard assumes this means that white mated black! So the game is over. The second game is fine because EXchess has recieved the "xboard" command from winboard and is now in winboard mode. The way to fix this is to put the "xb" command in the command line of EXchess: winboard -fcp "c:\chess\EXchess xb hash 24" I've fixed the problem in version 3 of EXchess which I am working on right now. - Dan
