Chess programs are designed to be non-deterministic. I suspect that all of them have something like this: srand((unsigned)(double)time(NULL)); and use rand() from time to time to prevent the same thing from happening over and over. Imagine if they always played the same move from a given position. You could learn what it is, find a response, and kick their behind from then on. In other words, they will do what they darn well please and they please to be non-deterministic.
