An illustration: In the Chess Analysis Project, we time the compute power of machines. We have many programs operating, but mostly they are crafty programs. We always run every position twice. The time control is calibrated to be as exactly the same as possible for each platform. We take the two EPD records and compare them. About half the time, they are different. With the same program, with the same compute time allowed, with the same single position and without using an opening book.
