I also question this advice, especially with regard to f and h pawns. I have had
positions where as white I attempt to pin the knight on f6 with 1. Bg5, h6 2.
Bh4, g5 3. Bg3 Nh5 and black can trade the knight for the bishop, but at his
leisure. This seems to be a good strategy for black if he castles queenside.
Although recapturing towards the center with hg gives white an open h file, it
takes 3 moves to move f3, Kf2, and Rh1 in order to take advantage of it.
However, if you capture fg, your rook on f1 (assuming a white kingside castle)
immediately has a half open file and the king has refuge on h1 if needed.

There just seems to be a lot of exceptions to the rule (guideline) on this one,
especially around the king.
