This was the subject of a lively discussion a year ago when a "new" program that had a parallel search appeared in the Dutch computer chess championship. It was later revealed that it was nothing more than a modified Crafty. There have been others... "voyager" was an outright copy, but messages were converted to German, for one example... They won't be the last, either, I am afraid... which is why the ICCA has a stricter 'no-clone' rule for the WMCCC/WCCC events now.
