well, learning some new things. I always thought nps was number of legal positions seen per second by the chess engine. Because one engine uses more chess knowledge than others it mainly weeds out unpromising positions on forehand and that reduces its node speed, so I thought. In other words it has to do more evaluation work while looking at individual positions than an other 'faster' engine.
