Hi: This Spracklen "racconto" put in the front line the issue about why some programmers suddenly disappear from the scene. I asked this to Martin Bryant, the author of Colossus, one of he first Pc programs enough strong to deserve attention -you can see the interview I did to him in WCCR- and the answer seems to be that a moment comes when just new challenger call the interest of the guy beyond chess, although I suppose that also operates a feeling that nothing more can be done, that you have exhausted your ideas and that you are not going to match the current leading programmer. For the Spracklen it seemes to me that the black beast was Lang, that finally overtook them. After they failed in Fidelity to beat Richard, the Spracklen were hired by Saitek to develop the program to kill all programs, they worked on it a lot of time, they used the best hardware of that years and nevertheless the result was just a kind of boosted Par Excellence uncapable of beating he leading programs. So I suppose they were fired and they decided to aim his talents to oher things. Of course all the previous lines are suppositions. I too would like to see Dan or Kathe or both returnning to the arena. fernando
