I don't know if it is true with the latest release, but with prior releases,
using egcs gave you the bleeding edge of whatever they were doing (read 'beta')
and gcc was the formally released version.  My experience was different (that
is, I got *better* performance with the EGCS version) but I use CYGNUS for NT,
and not the Linux version.
