I do not know if he could beat it at tournament time control but I know that karpov had a very good position so my impression is that he could beat shredder if he had more time. It is of course possible that shredder could play better if shredder had more time but the claim that karpov cannot beat shredder is unfair to karpov because karpov had not the opportunity to play against shredder4 at tournament time control.
