Algol was the original recursive computer language, predating B, which predated
C. It was very useful for specifying numerical and logic algorithms independant
of platform. ACM published it algorithms in Algol. ALGOrithmic Languange, a
binary star. What would take 500 lines of FORTRAN could be dashed off in 50
with Algol. DC Algol was Burroughs' (Unisys after Burroughs bought Sperry)
implementation of a Algol as a Data Comm language. It used a 48 bit word,
implemented reverse polish notation in hardware, and had an inaccessible macine
instruction set--you could only program in Algol, DCAlgol, or in compilers
written in Algol or DCAlgol, which were themselves written in Algol and DCAlgol.
