At present I don't have that kind of time to start writing the working program (at least not the type I have in mind), but have just enough time to explore methods, write and play with some prototyping quality code (the main one is a long range positional planner, based on the generalization of Botvinnik's "field of play" construct), write down various ideas, read up papers, and whatever else can be done in scattered small chunks of time. Regarding the "max legal moves" topic, I expected a byte per move would do, but it seems the exact max is still an open question. Although for a practical program, one probably need not worry at all. If the program were to lose a game because of exceeding such limit, the finding it and moving the boundary would surely be more interesting than winning one game.
