Algol was the best language of it's day (60s). After so many years of people
having to write in machine language, there was finally a good higher level
language. Similar to Pascal in some respects if I remember correctly and I think
the source of some of Wirth's ideas for Pascal (Wirth also contributed on some
aspects of Algol, but years after it was orginally developed).
