If I type it in directly, I error out with "Unsupported mode"

If I put brackets around it (like the help indicates) I get this:
[ white, 1 ]
<rnbqkbnr/ppp1pppp/8/8/2pP4/2N5/PP2PPPP/R1BQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1>
error in fen line
