Subject: CM6000 benchmarks (speed vs RAM)

Greetings,

I'm working on upgrading an old computer, formerly an IBM Aptiva 535 2144-67P
SLC, i486dx2 66MHz, no cache, 24MB RAM. Now an AMD5x86 135MHz, 256KB L2 cache,
64MB RAM.

Strange as it may sound, when I plugged in more RAM, my Chessmaster 6000
benchmark slowed down!? That runs contrary to what is expected -- more RAM,
faster speed. Right? But it's a fact, and I wonder if I have discovered
something of general value, or if it's just an anomoly of this particular
hardware system.

For the benchmark tests, I calculate a standard position using standard settings
on CM6000, and note the amount of time it takes to reach a certain ply depth.
If 32MB RAM is my standard benchmark=100, when I plug in 48MB RAM the benchmark
slows down to 95, and if I plug in 64MB total RAM the benchmark slows down to
62. That's a very big slowdown.

Any ideas or feedback appreciated. Thanks.
