I have looked at bitboards in a limited way. I suspect beyond move generation, most bitmap benefits come from faster evaluation functions. However, for just move generation, using non-rotated bitboards, and just looping with occupied bitmaps for sliding pieces, I have found that it is faster to combine bishops/queens and rooks/queens. Also, or-ing white with black on the fly to get all occupied (and compliment that for none) seems faster than full bitmaps for each piece type. I use pawns, knights, bishops/queens, rooks/queens (with separate black and white maps) and all black and all white pieces. Limited testing of full blown bitmaps in Crafty vs this "beginner bitmaps" approach showed the simple bitmaps to be very slightly faster, but again only for move generation.
