The pruning of nodes is an ongoing struggle.

I do razoring in the full width search following the example in crafty.
From memory, if there is nothing that triggers an extension at this ply, and
the score is bad I reduce the search depth by 1 ply.
Bad is defined as follows:

if ((curDepth == 2) && (Extensions == NoExtensions) &&
     (-eval()+RazorWindow)< alpha))
     Extensions+=StdDepthReduction; //this is a negative number

I also due recursive null move pruning.

I am working on QSearch delta pruning, which speeds up the search by as much
as 50% but significantly hampers it positional score on LCT II. This may be
due to luck in finding some positional advantages that now get pruned away.

Hope this helps.
