The pruning of nodes is an ongoing struggle.
I do razoring in the full width search following the example in crafty.
From memory, if there is nothing that triggers an extension at this ply, and
the score is bad I reduce the search depth by 1 ply.
Bad is defined as follows:
if ((curDepth == 2) && (Extensions == NoExtensions) &&
(-eval()+RazorWindow)< alpha))
Extensions+=StdDepthReduction; //this is a negative number
I also due recursive null move pruning.
I am working on QSearch delta pruning, which speeds up the search by as much
as 50% but significantly hampers it positional score on LCT II. This may be
due to luck in finding some positional advantages that now get pruned away.
