Subject: I thought Anand, by beating Karpov in Leon Spain, is Fide's Champ?

I was browsing through worldfide.com to see the results of the matches.
As I browsed I read something the Karpov was the Fide champ and was
disqualified only because he refused to participate in the current Fide
tournament. However, I remembered something about Anand beating Karpov 5-1
in Leon, Spain for the Fide World Championship.
-Did the match in Leon, Spain has really no bearing on the title for the
      FIDE World Champ.
-What was at stake at that match? (Leon, Spain)

  Confused
