If the goal of computer chess were to make the program that does the best without an opening book, everyone would immediately make a lot of changes to their program. It would be nice if these programs could handle general positions well, but the initial setup position is pretty weird, and it is forgivable for someone to try to cope with that position via an opening book. bruce
