James, my impressions are similar to yours. Twelve days in Las Vegas at the FIDE fiasco proved that their primary interest is not about great chess, not about the best competitors, not even about FIDE. The program which was given out free of charge sort of said it all. The entire publication was devoted to the agrandisement of the FIDE executives. Many of the officials of FIDE had their photos placed 3 and 4 times in the program. Not one photo of a chess player was published in the program. Of the total of 72 players plus who were invited, only 10 short bios appeared. It was difficult for non chess enthusiasts to determine the players country of origin, the players competitive history, or anything of interest about any of the players. There was no monitor set up in the hall to enable viewers to kabitz out of earshot. Once play progressed into the quarterfinals, attendance dropped off sharply. Contrast that fact with other world competitions. FIDE needs major restructuring IMHO.
