I agree FIDE has problems with respectability. However, if you look at the history of chess, it has always been politics. It has always been about control. It doesn't matter if you are talking about an organization like FIDE or the USCF, or if you are talking about the players. That's human nature. But when you hold a tournament for World Champion and your organization has been in charge of that for the last 50 years, it really doesn't matter if a few of the strongest players refuse to play. A lot of the fans may be swayed to think that the tournament was a joke due to their lack of participation, but it wasn't a joke to Kramnik or Shirov. If either of them would have won, he would have walked around PROUD to hold the title of World Chess Champion. He would have taken it VERY seriously. So although it may be a joke to you, it isn't a joke to them. KarinsDad :)
