Castling is normally reversable as far as piece positions (King versus the pertinent Rook), by a typically lengthy series of moves (but specific positions may change this). It is not reversable as far as having the right to castle again. 2. In many games, GMs do not castle, and prefer instead to use a Rook to support an attack using a R or N column. There is no provable 'rule' that Castling is 'making progress' and non-Castling is 'not making progress'--it depends on the type of position and even then, on GM judgement (which often varies). --Steve Boak
