IE one common example is the old auto232 drivers. Someone looked at the chess program executable, figured out how to look at the video controller's memory to see when a move had been made, etc. IE basically the same idea as the original poster asked for. It wasn't illegal. It wasn't wrong. Even the commercial programmers ended up using this 'hack' to test their programs against other programs. Seems like a totally moot issue, in that light?
