Copyrights commonly give restrictions but not in every country such restrictions are recognized by laws: in that countries those restrictions might not apply. (Some companies actually refuse to sell in some countries). I repeat: in the european community there is a law that says tha if you need you can reverse a code and modify it to make it work better in cooperation of another program you have. (Please note that I'm not an expert and I don't know all the fine details). People are not supposed to: - need any authorization to do this; - they CANNOT distribute it, unless the other part has both programs and also needs that interoperability - of course they cannot modify a code with this excuse and distribute a cracked version of it to people that dont have it > so does that mean if you belong to one of these countries it gives > you the right to post on here and say hey Ed (Rebel) stuff you, here > is the crack for everyone to use to crack your program and use it for free. I'm not talking about cracking! This would be "modify a program to make it cooperate with another". An this is LEGAL in Europe, period. > I do not think so, I doubt very much that any country allows cracking > or hacking of programs, I know for one thing that Microsoft does not > want anyone touching their operating system or altering it. They sure don't want, but they also cannot stop people from doing it. License agreement that come with software are always written to scare you so that you even think that if you have a bad dream they might come to you and take away your license. Reality is somewhat different, and on the other side there are the rights of the customers that are protected by laws as well. >you say under some conditions, well this is a condition where you have >to ask before you do. no: you don't. >As for hacking, it mean getting into the program to either alter or >change it, otherwise there is no need to hack a program. So I think >your two points are not clear. Yes you're right, I meant that somebody CAN modify a program with NO AUTHORIZATION. Under the condition expressed vaguely above. This was a generic statement to object the original posting. Please understand that I do not recoomend anybody to do it to steal software, I think chess programmers need all our support, but I would for sure not be afraid of a patch to CM6000 that makes it work in winboard, keeping the CD insertion requirement if you like. kind regards Franz
