Hi Georg,
  Your statement which says that with a pawn more in a standard K vs K endgame
will mean victory but that is not always so!
  Example 1: If you have a pawn on the rook file and your opponents king can
beat your king to the queening square, your out of luck, "Draw"
  Example 2: You aren't able to get in front or ahead of your pawn before the
opposing king does and he has the opposition, and now you have once again a
"draw"!
