That is the problem. It does not matter which piece I try to move, it will not
let me move the piece at all (this only happens occasionally). It's almost as if
it thinks it is black to move instead of white, but my clock continues to click
down.

Bummer.

I am not talking about the 5x5 view that gives the hint. I am talking that I
make a correct move and then animation suddenly turns on and instead of just
making the next black move, the animator will make the next several moves until
it finishes the combination. The reason I know that I made a correct move is a)
I understand this particular position and b) the tree of moves to the right
include my move order.

From your statement on the AI above (where it will finish the combination for
you if it thinks you do not have a clue), it appears to be a bug in the AI that
I came across when it did this when I did have a clue. But, I wonder why you did
not come across it.

At my level of play, most any combination that works reasonably is probably ok.
This is probably more of a problem for someone of your ability, but would only
occasionally be a problem for me (i.e. I rarely see the solution it is
providing, let alone come up with a different correct one). It's unfortunate,
however, that it has this flaw since it is important to allow any correct
solution to be played. But, thanks for letting me know about it.
