It was painful enough when he lost to Kasparov. To me, it was as if "chess
truth" was overcome by a barbarian who was MERELY stronger.

Now this.

As one who spent months and months studying Karpov's games, to think of this
smooth, perfect-looking player losing his pieces and pawns to an amoral brute is
somewhat painful.

We all asked for this...

Some of the mysterious psychological forces, such as hero-worship, that cause
some people to become obsessed with this game will be altered in ways that are
hard to predict. We had "demigods" whom we could meet in the pages of books.
Now, it is paradise lost. Crafty, like Icarus, flew up to the gods, but its
wings did not burn. And soon, there will be no chess-gods.
Reuben Fine, we need you now.
