It could as well be an overheating problem (a tournament is putting the CPU
under severe strain) so that one could consider to get a better cooler or/and
use a CPU software cooler (a program that powers down the CPU when in idle) .

On the other side I had similar problems with  2 different PC's, but my
impression was that the problms were coming from the Winboard engines.
