This is an interesting issue for a lot people. Even though I spend much of my
free time with different free programs (perhaps too much of it :)), I do not
consider myself a specialist. Still, I would venture to suggest that the top
five programs could be Anmon 4.27, Comet B.x, Crafty 16.x, Goliath 2.x and
Phalanx. Still I am having problems with including or not the very strong Gromit
program -- I haven't yet tested its latest version 2.20... Gromit could be just
as strong as Comet, Goliath or Phalanx. (Of course, the above ordering was
alphabetical.) Very close to them are Zchess, The Crazy Bishop, Ant 3.61,
Lambchop 7x and the new program, Bringer. All in all, a very nice crop of
strong free programs for the chess enthusiast :))

Regards,
Djordje
