Depending on what sort of chess program you have and how much assembly you want to put into the project, the vector stuff could make a chess program much faster. However, most of the programs I'm familiar with use algorithms that wouldn't benefit very much. Is Motorola going to continue developing PowerPC? Last summer they were saying that they would make the G4 and then close up shop. So you might end up writing a lot of assembly for a processor that will go the way of the 680x0. If you do a lot of vector stuff, I think it would be worthwhile to investigate comparable Intel instructions. They may be slower now, but you can be sure that Intel will continue to support it and Intel will always make faster processors... -Tom
