A new tourney is about to start , and the name is program :=) After thinking about some of the things posted recently I tend to believe that some complaints about autoplayer and permanent brain are right and logical. Rules following : Time Control : 60 moves / 60 minutes Round Robin I'll play on two computers manually with the strongest settings I know for every prog. Every computer has to play 2 games on the slower and 2 on the faster computer against every opponent with either colour. 1. computer : Pentium 233 MMX 32 MB RAM, Windows 98 2. computer : Pentium II 300 128 MB RAM, Windows NT This makes 4 games for every match . To qualify programs have to run on both platforms without problems. I plan to play about 4 games every week with the best 8 programs I know right now , so the tourney will last 28 weeks :=) . Versions of progs will not be changed during tourney . The opponents I think of are : Hiarcs 7.32 ( using the tablebases delivered with it and hiarcs.ctg ) Fritz 5.32 ( general.ctg ; tablebase-engine ; SP 1 installed ) Genius 6 ( SP 1 installed ) Junior 5.0 Nimzo 2000 Crafty 16.17 ( Hiarcs-Tablebases , book built from enourmous ) CS Tal 2.03 Shredder 3.0 The debatable entries here are obvious ; Tal and Genius might be too weak and influence the outcome as maybe the prog who can get the best scores against them will win the tourney but all other entries I know would be debatable too. But any tourney rules will influence the outcome for sure :=) . What I hope to get is data about the ability of the progs to perform on different hardware speed too although there will be very few games played like this after the tourn still ... I plan to start on sunday ; so if you have a suggestion to improve the tourney you are welcome to add helpful suggestions. Hmm , what do I expect as result ? A battle for the win between Hiarcs and Fritz. Shredder and Junior close to them but probably performing too bad on the slower comp. Nimzo2000 and Crafty battling for 5th . Genius and Tal fighting against the last place . Well, I might be surprised when it is finished at last, and the rest of the world is playing with Crafty 18.12 , Junior 6.0 and Fritz 6.0 already :=) . Feedback is welcome . Pete
