Hello, Kelly;

Trying do write a chess program in COBOL would be a pointless exercise of
patience. You'd rather forget about it.
To be frank, being a Computer Science teacher, I think you should forget about
COBOL altogether, as soon as possible. My father gave me the same advice, some
13 years ago, and I never regreted it.
