It's definitely possible, but the algorithm has to be seriously tweaked to work well in a chess program. I suggest looking on the web for an explanation of nega-max searching (which is simply recursive alpha-beta searching). Any self-respecting "how to" chess programming site will explain this concept at the beginning.
