The games at the end of this message do not reflect any great credit on me. The
earliest one is the only one in which I can take any pride. Obviously, in the
others, I was simply taking advantage of Rebel's tendency to mishandle this
particular opening variation. The games were played with the "strongest
settings", except for reduced hashtables in some, which has been noted. My
closest call was the last game, where I checkmated with three seconds left. The
program version is Rebel 10.0c. My computer is only a P133; although Rebel is
very strong on this hardware, it certainly can't "be all that it can be".
What is bothering me is that Rebel doesn't seem to be drawing any useful
conclusions from its mistakes. Book learning is turned on, yet the program
still walks into the same horrible positions. That is why I keep on playing
this line when the computer allows it; I want to see it learn from the
experience.
Am I simply expecting too much from book learning? Although this variation of
the Center Counter game is not really all that dangerous for Black, I'm sure
that if I had this many wins against Fritz, it would drop the whole opening.
By the way, if you think that you note many mistakes in my play, you are quite
right. These were blitz games, and I am only human;-).
