Go up one level in this thread
9.7.99 I'm coming in a bit late on this one but I just wanted to toss a couple opinions out for consideration. One, I agree with the posting that we cannot assume that Mr. Kasparov himself is not playing the game. He says he is, we must take him at his word (unless some other evidence pops up). I have never found the champion to be a liar or bad for the sport so I will take and trust his word on this matter. If he is using his staff for consultation (as when it is allowed in a break in a match), I don't think this is a problem either. The World Team is most certainly using every resource at their disposal (including suggested moves from GMs posted right on the site) so I think this is fair as well. Two, I have been involved with the match as a World Team member (well ... of course) from the start and I have found it to be an exciting event. Granted, my wife wants to dust the chess board I am using for the game but even she (a non-chess person) thinks it is great. I can't think of a better way to inspire the young and old to give chess a go or for people who have let their game stagnate to re-ignite that fire. When else do you get to have an on-line Q&A event with the world champion? Three, I don't think the World Team is benefitting whatsoever from team member collaboration on any of the message posting sites (I cannot be certain if any collaboration with computer programs has been beneficial overall). This part of the match I gave up on very, very early. Bickering, name-calling, sexually-explicit insults (one to a GM who posted out of the kindness of their heart, no doubt), and other such behavior on the "official" board and other, alternative boards, left me with a profound disgust and wonderment concerning this incivility. I am afraid, however, that is an entirely different debate. To end this overly long note, I have enjoyed the match to no end and, aside from the useless freaks who have ruined the message boards, I have not found one aspect of this event to criticize. Respectfully yours, Kelly Patterson
