Like many who are severely afflicted with Chess Fever, I have several dedicated portable units of various shapes, sizes, strength and cost. One of my pet peeves with every unit, without exception, is the lack of contrast between the pieces and the board. It’s bad enough that the manufacturers consistently disregard established tournament standard color schemes by giving us silver squares and pieces, biege squares and pieces, etc., but to give us a ¼ to ½ inch tall black piece on a black square!!!! The situation is aggravated by the fact that the viewing angle for a hand-held or portable unit is often from above, rather than across the board. I thought I would pass on a little modification which I have used on several of my units to improve the contrast between board and pieces. It’s a lot easier to change the color of the pieces than it is the board (I know…I tried). You would be amazed at what a difference it makes to spray paint those little black pieces red. Yea, I know red’s not exactly tournament standard either but it works, it’s cheap and it’s easy. Those little red pieces stand out brilliantly on a black square. I’ve done this mod to my Travel Champion, Opal Plus and Avalon. Much Better. Dave
