I hate to recommend reading, but this is from the english.txt file of Comet
version B05 found at Frank's site:
10. ENDGAME TABLE BASES
-----------------------
With version B.03, Comet supports the 5 man endgame table bases
by Eugene Nalimov, who is btw also author of "Siberian Chess".
DOS: for the DOS-version COMET32.EXE, the DOS environment variable
"tb_path" has to be set prior to program start. It has to point
to the directory containing the table base files. This can be
set tb_path=c:\edb
WINBOARD: there are 2 new additional lines in the init file "comet.ics"
of the winboard comet COMET-WB.EXE
TB_PATH: c:\edb
TB_CACHE [nr of megabytes]: 4
The 2nd entry defines the size of memory to be used as a table base
cache (to decrease the number of "painful" hard disk accesses).
This value plus the value for HASH_MAX plus 1 MB for the program
itself can be expected to yield the memory use of Comet
The DOS-version always uses 4 MB for this cache.
The table bases will be also supported in their compressed format.
For the DOS-Comet, these files must be renamed:
e.g. rename kpkp.nbb.emd kpkpnbb.emd
and so on.
The DOS-Comet ("COMET32.EXE") can get problems with auto232 when
the table bases are being heavily accessed. Installation of a large disk
cache (10 MB or more) with SMARTDRV may help.
Table bases in the compressed format can be downloaded from the web
