Chessmaster 5500 is very good, and version 6000 has added some nice features,
particularly a much better database. Of the reasons for getting Fritz also,
here are the ones that are most significant to me.

Fritz has "book learning" which means that it will, to a certain extent, learn
from its mistakes. If you are good enough to beat the computer sometimes at its
top strength, or if you plan to test it against other programs, this might be
important to you.

The database function is much better than CM5500 and IMHO somewhat better than
CM 6000.

The Fritz interface can be used with many other engines, some of which you can
download free. This is also true of the other programs in the ChessBase family,
Junior, Nimzo99, and Hiarcs 7.32.

There is a review of Fritz 5.32 in Web Computer Chess Reports in the Computer
Chess Resource Center on this web page. Another review, and reviews of other
programs, is available at http://hometown.aol.com/rjpawlak/ch_widow.html.

The manufacturer's home page is http://www.chessbase.com/.
