Glad you made the jump, Matthew, Welcome

If you want to read books, I recommend two:
Chess Skill in Man and Machines - Slate & Atkins, old, and still a great book.
How Computers Play Chess by David Levy

There are a wealth of websites you'll hear about for chess programming! I'll
just mention www.xs4all.nl/~verheltst/chess/programming.html, but there are lots
of others, too.

To look at some code, I recommend starting with Tom's Simple Chess Program
(TSCP) (which is a wonder of clarity and function in a small package), and also
KISSChess, which I'll e-mail to you. Both are in 'C' - the most common computer
language for chess programs.

If you want to see a __really__ strong program, take a look at Robert Hyatt's
Crafty, available at his website. It has every bell and whistle that Dr. Hyatt
can fit into it to make it strong. Killer program.

Best Wishes on your program, Matthew.

Dave
