This stuff is a kind of new incarnation of an old discussion: what is that thing that a chess computer really is? The engine? The total thing, including hardware, database, etc ? Can we separate those elements? Has sense? Imagine a guy saying "I will play Sampras to see who is best, but only if he forgets all he knows about tennis, only if he lose a leg, only if he use a 2x2 square inch raquet and only if he cover his eyes". The demand that engines plays in equal platform only has sense from the point of view of the customer, that has this or that normal computer and so only have "one platform" to use with any chess program he can get. It is a legitimate curiosity and demand, but only in that terms. And of course is relative, also, to what is considered a "normal" computer. That depends of place, time and money. And also of an eventual lack of desire to get the very last thing available. For me, "normal" is just my 233 - or it is 266?- Armada or my 200 Mhz self-assembled desktop. I just got bored to purchase one computer after another. Fernando
