I would suggest you start with understanding the MiniMax en AlphaBeta algorithms. That is the hart of every chess program on earth. Take some time for that. Then start with a Four in a row program to try these things out. Personally I found it very exciting to see it work. And then take a look at Tom's Simple Chess Program which is an instructive 1000 line C program. Well at least that is sort of how I got involved. With 4inarow you can test negamax, alphabeta, hashing, extensions, move sorting. Of course you could toy directly with Toms's SCP too, if you want to go directly to chess. Regards, Bas Hamstra.
