The deep blue guys did something pretty clever, by using a select set of GM
games and tuning their eval in an automatic way to make it favor positions
that occurred in those games.  They also had a tool that would let them fix
a positional weakness while not wrecking the evaluation in all those other
positions...

Most of us first add the terms, then adjust them over time as we watch the
programs play games...  but it is difficult...
